As outlined by the HMRC, you are allowed to claim a mileage refund at a rate of 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles you have travelled in a year. After you have reached the 10,000 mark, you can only claim a total of 25p per mile on the additional mileage that year. If you have been reimbursed partially by your employer, you are only allowed to claim back the difference. For instance, if you have been paid 35p per mile by your employer, you are allowed to claim the difference of 10p on the first 10,000 miles of work-related travel that year.

The key thing to remember, is that as long as you meet the criteria, it doesn’t matter if you are employed and your tax is dealt with through the PAYE scheme, you can make a claim for your mileage refund.
Every single day, employees drive to and from work and spend hundreds of pounds out of their own earnings on work-related expenses; often without even knowing they are doing it. This means that there are potentially hundreds and thousands of pounds in unclaimed taxes just sitting around in the HMRC’s bank account, serving no purpose whatsoever. In fact, estimated figures suggest that there is around £200 million in unclaimed travel expenses and approximately 1 in every 3 UK employees are eligible for a tax refund through PAYE. Simply put, if you currently drive your car or have driven your car as part of your job (beyond the daily commute to and from work), then this is your money to claim and you are entitled to make a claim on it and deserve to be reimbursed. If you also find yourself reaching into your own pocket for other work related expenses such as tools, workwear and food we can claim for these too.
